What is “green remodeling?”

“Green remodeling” is a term that is commonly used in our industry but is often not fully understood by the average consumer.    It involves an holistic approach to creating living spaces that are healthier and more efficient while minimizing the impact on the environment.  These are some of the key considerations and accepted building practices:

  • Create a design that minimizes the disruption to the site and surrounding natural environment
  • Re-purpose materials whenever possible.   Reduce and divert construction and demolition debris away from the landfills.
  • Be mindful and responsive to in-home air quality during construction and after.
  • Conserve water with highly efficient fixtures and appliances
  • Use renewable energy technologies
  • If you are opening up walls, use this as an opportunity to add/increase insulation before closing up
  • Upgrade windows and doors.  Replace weather stripping and caulk seams on a regular basis.
  • Use Energy Star appliances
  • Reduce or eliminate the use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).  There are a number of cost competitive low VOC paints available now.
  • Use FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood for framing
  • Use recycled or rapidly renewable materials whenever possible
  • Do regular home maintenance
